Well, friends. Today is both a sad and exciting day for me!

At 6:02pm, I bought my last conventional cosmetic item — a purchase I’d been waiting for patiently and finally decided to pull the trigger on as a grand-finale. From now on, this blog will focus on products that are either natural, organic, or spouting some other “green” claim-to-fame.

(This includes refraining from any products that are tested on animals…And those are harder to avoid than you think, because a cosmetic line can say they don’t test their products on animals while sourcing ingredients from China that ARE tested on animals. Shitty, right?)

This change comes from a place of introspection. As a freshly-minted Aunt, I keep thinking about the kind of world I want him to grow up in. Ideally, it would be one in which if he ate my lipstick, my first thought would be “oh boy, that’s going to be a weird poop” and not “oh shit, do I need to call poison control?!” A future where his girlfriend or daughter can read an ingredients list and understand everything they’re putting on/into their bodies and not worry about the long-term health impact.

To be clear, I am not into fear-mongering, nor am I here to challenge people’s preferences regarding makeup, so if you disagree with me about wanting to go more natural: I am not offended, I hear where you’re coming from, and I respect your choice. I love science. I understand the benefits of synthetic chemicals and the trade-offs when reducing them. I love the badass things scientists have accomplished with cosmetics. I just personally decided to make the switch for a number of reasons (sustainability being the big one) and want to do my part to put enough information out there that other consumers can make the best educated choice for their lifestyle and goals.

Honestly, I think a lot of people might already have a little voice in their head suggesting they rethink their current cosmetics, but don’t switch because they feel like most natural makeup won’t perform well. But, as a lot of fabulous brands have proven already: looking great, feeling great, and feeling great about the products we use to look great are not mutually exclusive. The goal of this blog is to give those products a boost of exposure in a very saturated market. T

The long and short of it is this: I want to be your resource for what products are out there, how they work, and whether or not they hold a candle to their conventional counterparts.  I will keep using cosmetics I already own until they run out or expire so that I don’t waste anything and can still write up all the reviews I had planned! But moving forward, I will be “going green.”

Also, side note, for future product reviews, I will have a methodical summary section to address five parameters of cosmetics that I think are most important:
1. Packaging
2. Pigmentation
3. Longevity
4. Texture
5. Truthfulness of Claims/Marketing/Ingredients

Okay, that’s it, friends! Sorry for the rambling post, I hope all of that made sense! I’d love to hear from you on your feelings about my switch 🙂
